Golf
Tip Of The Month
Master Your Sand Play
Like
any aspect of the game, improving your bunker play takes practice. But
practicing the wrong technique will do little but further ingrain whatever
mistakes you’re already making. As a result, instead of getting better,
you’ll probably just get worse. The good news is, the fundamentals of solid
sand play are actually pretty simple, and can be learned quickly provided you
take the time to make certain your set-up and execution are correct.
The
key to becoming confident in the sand is to make your goals realistic. Pulling
off miracle shots that stop within gimme range takes a tremendous amount of
talent and expertise. Don’t get time, at least initially. Start by learning to
get the ball on the green consistently, with a chance to make a par-saving
putt.
Standard
Shot
Set-up
To
assume the proper position at address, be certain the ball is located toward the
front of your stance, near the left heel. The face of the club should be open
slightly, depending on the depth of the bunker. The more height you want on the
shot, the more open the clubface must be. Position your feet fairly wide apart
to promote balance, and point them to the left of the target with at least 75%
of your body weight on the front foot.
Finally,
grip down slightly on the shaft for enhanced club head control, and work your
feet into the sand until you feel your footing is stable and secure.
Back swing
For
the best results, take the club up quickly in the back swing, which will promote
a steep angle of attack. A wide stance with the majority of weight on the front
foot and a swing with minimal rotation will promote this type of back swing. Be
certain to take the club up to the top with your arms, not by cocking your
wrists or turning your body. The length of the swing should always be relatively
full, even on short shots.
Impact
At
impact, your weight should move even farther toward the front foot while your
knees continue to remain flexed. Contrary to what most recreational golfers
believe, the club shouldn’t strike the ball from an outside-in swing path, but
should instead come straight down the target line and then move left immediately
after impact. The club head should enter the sand approximately two inches
behind the ball and should pass through the sand on a flat trajectory. This will
displace enough sand to throw the ball out of the bunker and onto the green. Any
attempt to scoop the ball out of the sand will most likely result in a poor
shot.
Finish
The
length of the follow through should be shorter than a full shot due to the lack
of body rotation and the lack of release of the club through impact. The
clubface should remain fairly open into the finish to allow the ball to come out
softly and on the intended target line. Your arms should stay close to your
body, with the speed of the swing and its length, determining the distance the
shot travels.

Grounds
Update
by Doug Hamman, Superintendent
Well
its seems the heat wave has broke, which is nice.
I am looking forward to some cooler weather.
Over the past month the crew and I have been maintaining the course.
We have done a lot of hand watering to make sure the greens where staying
cool.
The greens, surprisingly, did very well in this heat.
Coming up this month, we are going to try to work in the new tee box at
hole #6. I am currently finalizing the irrigation and once I do that we will be
ready to go.
Also, our last aerification of greens, and tees is coming up.
The greens will be on September 13, please check with the pro shop on
final scheduling.
Also, the tees will be done that same week.
Sorry about any inconvenience with this, just a necessary evil.
I hope everybody has a great month of golf, see you on the course.

GAME DAY/NIGHT
AT
THE CLUB
I
hope by now everyone has received the memo with the schedule for the Cowboys
regular season games.
Since these games apparently will be televised in this area, the Club
will be open for all the games.
We
are trying this out and hoping it will be a success.
It was so much fun in the Playoff Games last year that several people
asked if we couldn't do it for all the games.
We're going to try, and as long as we have a good attendance we'll keep
it going. If it doesn't appear to be working (low attendance), we will send a
memo with at least one full week's notice so you can plan accordingly.
Bob
Schillo has graciously 'volunteered' to be the Master of Ceremonies (like we
could keep him from it!!!) so it should be fun for all!
If the game is on at a time when the Club is usually closed, the plan is
to open it up one
hour before the game so that you can eat before the game begins if you wish.
The menu will be different for each game.
We are planning a "tailgate" menu for the opener; a memo will
be sent out with the full menu soon.
We
will also be open for the TEXAS/OU game on October 2nd.
At
all the games we encourage you to wear whatever team shirts or hats you wish
(watch those inappropriate sayings/drawings, though—kids are invited, too!)
and root/holler/scream/mock/encourage/ gesture/ signal, etc., your team and
other teams as any good fan would do!
We encourage you to especially cheer hard if you are for the OTHER team(s)--you
know who you are--because it's always more fun with a little competition.
The Club staff is looking forward to a busy and fun football season this year,

13th Annual Pinnacle Women’s Club Garage Sale
The
13th
annual Pinnacle Women’s Club garage sale is fast approaching.
Sale dates are Thursday, October 7th
from 7AM-6PM and Friday, October 8th,
7AM-4PM at the Mabank Pavilion, located behind the Teague Chevrolet dealership
on Business 175.
Set
up days are scheduled for Monday, October 4th from 11AM to 5PM, Tuesday and
Wednesday 8AM-5PM or until everything is displayed, priced and ready when the
doors open the following morning. Colleen
Hinckley and Pat Faherty are this year’s Co-Chairmen and, although they report
a record amount of merchandise already stored for this event they say, “We
still want more!”
Because
of the anticipated volume of sale items, more volunteers are desperately needed!
If
you can help either on set up days or during the sale itself, please contact
Colleen @ 903-451-5050 or email txhinckley@gmail.com. Any
amount of time you can set aside will be greatly appreciated.
We have numerous members unable to be here in person due to work or
family conflicts, but we are accepting monetary donations to help defray our
operating expenses enabling us to give more back to the community.
Please make your check payable to the PWC, designate it for the garage
sale, and mail to Treasurer, Bonnie Magee, 167 Saint Andrews Drive, Mabank,
Texas, 75156.
In
1998, the charter members of the Pinnacle Women’s Club made a meaningful
choice to promote the love of humankind, planting the seeds of their
philanthropic philosophy. What
evolved is a circle of goodwill supporting the community and the Women’s Club.
The garage sale is the catalyst that closes this loop.
Please help.

HOA NEWS
HOA
General Meeting
HOA
General Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, September 12 at 2:30 at the clubhouse.
All residents are welcome to attend.
Help
Please
adjust your sprinkler heads. Several
residents are not only watering the grass but the road in front of their homes.
This will cause the roads to deteriorate prematurely.
Thanks for your help in solving this problem.
Deer
Management Program
Deer
feeding is now prohibited in the Pinnacle Club except in designated areas.
We all love our deer, but there are too many of them for our natural
environment to support.
Wayne Helberg has
developed a plan of moveable feeders to gradually and systematically move the
deer to established food plots so that we can harvest the deer.
This idea was approved by the residents at previous HOA meetings and was
recommended by Texas Parks and Wildlife. If
all residents do not cooperate with the “no feeding rule”,
it is impossible for us to have a successful program.
Please do your part.

New Docking for Boats at
the Pinnacle
There
are new cleats on the concrete cap in front of the Pinnacle Clubhouse to allow
for boat parking and please bring your own bumpers to help protect your boat.
This will allow access for lake residents who want to use our club restaurant or
golf course. We have storage lockers for golf clubs available and we also have
lockers in the men and women’s locker rooms for your clothes.
